The Presentations Review Board

The Presentations Review Board considers challenges to specific advertised programs sponsored by registered student organizations. The Presentations Policy approved by the Board of Trustees, June 15, 1990, provides guidelines and procedures for registered student organizations with respect to presentations (films, speakers, and performers) invited to campus. The Office of Campus Programs is routinely responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the policy and reviews and approves or disapproves the proposals of student organizations for presentations. Any approved program may be challenged following the policy's challenge procedure. Challenges to an advertised program are submitted to the Director of Campus Programs. According to the policy, "If the director of campus programs judges that there are substantive grounds for the challenge, he or she will attempt to arbitrate a mutually agreeable solution to the matter. When the arbitration process is unsuccessful, the challenge will be referred to the Presentations Review Board."

"The vice president for student life will appoint the Presentations Review Board for the academic year. The board will consist of one undergraduate student and one graduate student recommend by the USG and GSA respectively; two faculty members, recommended by the Academic Senate; one administrative staff person recommended by the director of campus programs; assistant director of campus programs or his or her designee from OCP. The board will elect a chair at its initial meeting each academic year. Upon referral by the director of campus programs, the Presentations Review Board will consider challenges to specific advertised programs and will report its judgment directly to the executive vice president for a final decision. In its deliberations, the Board may request and receive any testimony, documents, or other information deemed relevant for considering the challenge. The Board may also be convened by the director of campus programs to review and make recommendations relative to aspects of the Presentations Policy and Procedures."

The rationale for the procedure is provided by the preamble of the presentations policy: "While the CUA president is charged by the trustees with ultimate responsibility for university policy with respect to presentations . . . sponsored by registered student organizations, it is important that he or she have the maximum benefit of meaningful faculty and student participation in those rare cases where the manner or subject matter of such a presentation is objected to by others in the university community." (Presentations Policy approved by Board of Trustees, June 15, 1990, and included in CUA Student Handbook.)
